Carruthers:
If
you want to be successful at work, it may help to see things from
the company's point of view.
Dr. Tim Irwin:
Corporations are attempting to survive and be successful
and if you're relevant to those goals, you'll be successful also
inside their corporation - but if you're irrelevant, you're not
going to be and you may get trampled.
Psychologist
Dr. Tim Irwin, author of the book Run
With the Bulls…
People have to
find jobs, number one, that inspire passion - in other words,
it brings out the best in them. Another is that it fits with
their interests and abilities; another is that I find people
particularly enjoy their work when they can see a direct connection
between what they do and how they may be serving others.
And that may
only require a simple shift in perspective.
So sometimes
I think it's important to say, "Hey do I have the right
perspective in what I'm doing?" A person who's processing
loan applications may see this as having a lot of drudgery but
on the other hand, it may be that that person is helping individuals
acquiring their first home. So, it's a very important process
in terms of helping young families. I mean, it may not always
be perspective but it often is.
Tim's book is
the result of a huge amount of research he conducted on what
it is that makes people successful.
The three things
that I found were: commitment, character and competence - it
was the individuals who really possessed those three primary
characteristics who were the ones that were highly successful.
