Everyday Emotions & Heart Disease
Interview
with Mimi Guarneri M.D., author of The
Heart Speaks
|
Mike
Carruthers:
The relationship between emotions, stress and heart disease
are becoming clearer and clearer.
Mimi Guarneri
M.D.:
There have been beautiful studies that have shown and looked at
people coming to the emergency room for example, just having had
a heart attack. There's a much higher incidence of anger within
the proceeding twenty-four hours.
Cardiologist,
Dr. Mimi Guarneri, author of the book, The
Heart Speaks says negative emotions cause stress and stress
really takes it's toll on your heart. But so much of our stress
is self-created.
Many of us are
still angry about things that have happened in the past that
we can't let go of. Many of us are worried about the future,
things that haven't even occurred yet. And we're not really
living in present moment.
All of which
is creating stress in your body and taking its toll on your
health. There are a lot of stress management skills and Dr.
Guarneri has a real simple one that can work wonders.
The minute you're
feeling like your getting into that stressed out situation I
want you to take a time out. And then start to do some breathing.
Five seconds in deep breath, five seconds out and start imagining
that you're breathing through your heart. Think about something
you love, think about your baby, or your grandchild, something
that reminds you of the love emotion and I will guarantee you
that when you start to think about the stressful situation you'll
have a different reaction to it.
