5, 2008 Where To Find A New Job Interview
with Susan Joyce Editor of www.job-hunt.org |
Mike
Carruthers:
The Internet has completely changed the way people look for work and in the process
has created some problems. For example the big job sites like Monster.com and
Careerbuilder.com … Susan
Joyce: For most recruiters, when you post a job on one of the big
job boards, it's like drinking from a fire hose. You get inundated with resumes
- and most of the resumes aren't qualified. Susan
Joyce, Director and Webmaster for Job-hunt.org,
says if you use these websites to look for a job… If
you don't meet the requirements, don't apply for the job. And if you do meet the
requirements then put it right at the top. "You want somebody with five years
of experience in software product marketing - I've got five years of experience
in software product marketing." Interestingly
those big job websites are not necessarily the best place to look for work. The
site where people find jobs the most often is Craigslist.org
- this surprised me too and it's been consistent for the last three years.
Even with all of the
high tech tools available, Susan says old-fashioned networking still works best. I
do informal surveys whenever I find out somebody's in a new job and I always say
"How did you find your job?" And they're almost always apologetic, "Well,
I didn't really look - my former boss called me or my neighbor had this opening
in his company." It's not, " I posted my resume on Monster.com and I
got twenty five phone calls from employers in the next three days". You
