Integrity
Interview
with Dr. Henry Cloud, author of Integrity
|
Mike
Carruthers:
How do you define integrity?
Dr. Henry Cloud:
Actually the word means to be integrated. And if someone truly
has integrity in the big picture it means they're a whole person
and they're able to show up and meet the demands of reality in
all areas of life.
Dr. Henry Cloud,
author of the book,
Integrity says integrity has several components.
One of them is
the ability to create and maintain trust. The second one is
what I call being oriented towards the truth. Let's say your
honest and you're kind of arrogant, what happens to the truth?
Well, you go into a situation for example and you have a lot
of blind spots, you've missed a lot of reality because nobody
can really tell you anything because you already know it all-but
you're honest.
Dr. Cloud gives
the example of Michael Dell of Dell Computers as someone with
integrity.
Because he was
perceived as aloof and disconnected-that half of the work force
of this 50 billion dollar company- they had found out on an
anonymous survey that everyone was ready to leave because of
the culture. Here's what Michael Dell does and part of why he's
a great leader. He says, "Look guys I'm learning this about
me, the truth is I'm shy and so I seem aloof." And he says,
"I'm going to work on it." Well, the whole thing turns
around.
So, here's when
your integrity really comes into play.
It's those moments
when some reality comes that actually pushes against our abilities
where we really have to try.
