10, 2005: Striving To Be Perfect II Interview
with Arthur Ciarmicoli, author of the book, Performance
Addiction | Mike
Carruthers: The definition of personal growth has changed somewhat
in just the last few years. Arthur
Ciarmicoli: You know there used to be a time when self-growth
meant spiritual growth. In our world today growing means achieving and perfecting.
And if you're always focused on perfecting yourself you can't live within your
own skin with comfort. Dr.
Arthur Ciarmicoli, author of the book, Performance
Addiction says those people are never comfortable in their own skin because
they're always in pursuit of perfection. They're
so afraid that if they're not performing that somebody else is getting ahead.
They don't realize that when you relax the brain and when you relax your physiology
and your immune system you perform longer and at higher quality. And
that has been proven over and over again… The
people that are spending fourteen, sixteen hours at work, I mean it's been proven,
the last 4 or 5 hours at work, if you were rested and you had a more balanced
life you could do that work in a half an hour the next day. So, when you're performing
all the time you release stress hormones and your brain doesn't function as well.
You become a very narrow thinker and you don't see all the variables you need
to solve problems. So,
how do you break out of performance addiction? If
you can start just by taking out some time to exercise and pay a little bit more
attention to your nutrition, take a half hour off your workday and focus on the
relationships in your life. I think you're going to notice that you're probably
going to sleep better and the next day your performance; the quality of your performance
will probably increase. At
somethingyoushouldknow.net I'm
Mike Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
