Carruthers:
Is there life after death? That question will forever be debated, but one brain
surgeon is very clear in his belief. Dr.
Allan Hamilton: I would have to tell you that the evidence I've
seen is overwhelming that life after death must exist. Surgeon
Dr. Allan Hamilton, author of the book The
Scalpel & the Soul… I
have never had a patient with a near-death experience that did not, number one
- describe very, very similar experiences. And this is across different cultures.
I think the second thing is that it really would not make sense in the context
that I've seen of consciousness surviving independently of brain function. To
illustrate that, Dr. Hamilton recalls a surgery… For
technical reasons, during the surgery, the heart had to be stopped so that all
circulation stopped. Now that person had no blood flow, no oxygen going to the
brain - we had an EEG that showed that the brain was completely silent. However,
the woman had a vivid recollection of everything that had happened in the operating
room. So here's a perfect example of memories being made at a time that the brain
is incapable of storing them and making them. So then you begin to say, "Well,
that must mean that there's an ability to create a consciousness in a mind that's
separate from the function of the brain." If
