with Jack Miller, author of Simply
Success | Mike
Carruthers:
For those of us who put in long hours at work, we're often told about the importance
of work-life balance. Well, here's another point of view… Jack
Miller: You cannot live a balanced life and build a great business.
I have never known a really successful businessperson who has lived a balanced
life. Jack Miller,
author of the book Simply
Success… They
all have worked ten, twelve hours or more a day building their business. You can
certainly do less but you're not going to build great success at that. I can't
imagine somebody going to Beethoven and saying, "You know you shouldn't practice
so much, you shouldn't work so much and you should have a balanced life"
- it doesn't seem to work that way. Jack
Miller built a very successful business supply business that he later sold to
Staples for millions of dollars. He says in the process of building his business
he missed out on lots of family events, but looks at it the way many business
people do. A bigger
problem for me would have been to end my life realizing that I did not reach or
even come close to my potential. And the only thing I could really talk about
to my friends, or take some pride in was what my children were accomplishing,
not what I accomplished. I think that would have been a worse problem for me than
saying, "Hey, I spent a little bit too much time at my desk." At
