Mike Carruthers:
When you do the math, it becomes clear that we're facing a real
shortage of workers.
Tony
Zeiss:
The baby boomer generation is of course the largest generation
of American and they're all retiring. And succeeding generations
are not going to be able to fill that worker gap, so we're facing
this looming labor shortage.
Dr. Tony Zeiss, author of the book, Get
'Em While They're Hot
Even
the conservative labor economists say we're going to be short
10 million workers in just 6 years. And we're almost at a crisis
if you think about it, in public school teachers and in health
care professionals, particularly nursing. Well pretty soon it's
going to move to every area.
The good
news is, this is a great time if you're a motivated, career
oriented person, to really write your own ticket. And Tony says
it will be essential for employers to do all the right things
to attract and keep good people. Because there just won't be
enough of them.
If you
want to attract good employees, you have to develop a reputation
for being a good place to work. And you can't fake it. I mean,
you have to really be a good place to work. And then on retaining,
if you want to retain people…recognition is the number 1 motivator
of all American workers. I mean even if it's a mention in a
newsletter. If you've ever had a child, you know from the time
they begin to be aware of themselves, they're seeking recognition
and approval. So humans don't change much. Human nature hasn't
changed over thousands of years; people want to be recognized
for what they've done.
