Mike
Carruthers:
It's
fascinating how we get stuck behind our own mental barriers.
Jerry Wind:
Think about the four-minute mile before Roger Bannister broke
the record in 1954.
Dr. Jerry Wind,
co-author of the book, The
Power Of Impossible Thinking…
It was generally
believed that no one could run the mile faster than four minutes.
When he broke it, within three years, there were sixteen others
runners that broke the four-minute. People had the mental barrier
on the four-minute mile. They knew that no one could do it faster
and they didn't break it. The minute that they realized that
it could be done you had the sixteen other runners who did it.
The challenge to every one of us is; what are our four-minute
mile barriers?
Dr. Wind believes
that by constantly challenging the status quo you find great
opportunity. A good example is Starbucks, which started out
selling coffee. But just because that's all they sold didn't
mean that's all they had to sell. So, they started adding other
products.
For example,
frappuccino. If you think about some of the purists that started
Starbucks, they were startled when people suggested a product
such as frappuccino, because it's not the ideal type of coffee.
Frappuccino accounts for about 20% of Starbucks sales. So, they
continuously innovate. The mark of the good company is not someone
who is doing it once. But it's the mark of the company that
continuously innovate.
