Trans Fat - Why You Should Avoid It II
Interview
with Ronni Litz Julien, MS,RD, author of
The Trans Fat Free Kitchen
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Research
has shown that trans fat or partially hydrogenated fat is particularly
bad for you and should be avoided. So, where do you find it? -Well
margarines for starters.
Ronni Litz Julien:
Especially
the stick margarines, stick margarines today are more dangerous
than eating butter- because of the partial hydrogenation that's
in some of these margarines.
Registered dietician,
Ronni Litz Julien, author of the book, The
Trans Fat Free Kitchen says there are a few margarines that
don't' contain partially hydrogenated fat but very few and you
have to read the labels.
Partially hydrogenated
fats tend to be in things that are processed. You're not going
to find it in fresh fruits or vegetables, lean meats, cheeses,
dairy products, and beans. It's basically going to be in things
that are boxed and on your shelves.
Popcorn, pancake
mixes, cookies, peanut butter, frozen dinners, so many of these
contains trans fats that can do damage to the heart and destroy
arteries. And a lot of food processors are starting to get rid
of it.
Oreo's happened
to be the first one on the line of fire. And, you know, it took
them awhile to come up with something that could still maintain
it sitting on the shelves for so long and still have that same
flavor. Bisquick just took the partially hydrogenated fat out
of the pancake mixes. The wonderful day will come when they
will no longer use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in any
of our product.
