Viral Marketing
Interview
with David Meerman Scott, author of
World Wide Rave |
Mike Carruthers:
Viral
marketing - you hear people talking about it but what is it exactly?
David Meerman
Scott:
Viral marketing is the phenomenon of people on the web spreading
your ideas for you so it spreads like a virus.

Scott, author of the book World
Wide Rave…
People email
their friends with a URL that links to your stuff. People talk
about you on Facebook and on Twitter and in their blog.
Perhaps someone
has emailed you a funny video or picture - that is viral marketing.
But it doesn't have to be just funny stuff.
There's a lot
of other things that have the ability to spread - it could be
very, very interesting, it could be fascinating, it could be
outrageous and the things that do spread (I call them triggers)
are things like: a video, an ebook, a white paper, a photograph,
a chart, a graph.
One big rule
of viral marketing is it can't be just about your business or
product.
Then within the
content itself (like at the end of the video or at the end of
the ebook) you link to a place where people can learn more and
that's where the selling happens.
Viral marketing
is an art, says David - it's almost impossible to predict what's
going to take off so you have to put a lot of stuff out there.
And what does David think is a good idea of viral marketing?
What comes to
mind is one of my favorite U2 videos - it comes from CWS Toilets
and it's a video about self-cleaning toilets - I think it's
brilliant.
