Mike Carruthers:
How
we look at food has really changed.
Esther Blum:
We are not about enjoying the foods that we're eating. We're
about, "Oh my God it's fat-free, it's calorie-free, it's
this free, it's transfat-free, it's sugar-free"… it's like
well why don't we start enjoying foods for what they do have
which is delicious flavors.
Registered Dietician
Esther Blum, author of the book
Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous, says it's been proven that
if people would just slow down and enjoy what they eat, they
eat less - and here are some great healthy foods to consider.
Instead of a
bowl full of M&M's try a bowl full of blueberries, which
are the only fruit to help prevent age-related memory decline.
I think something people don't eat a lot of are pomegranates,
because they're daunted by how in the world to open them. A
pomegranate is hands down one of the healthiest foods you can
eat and it's absolutely delicious.
And another food
that's good for you that people often avoid is…
Avocado which
is rich in omega 9's and helps naturally lower cholesterol and
helps your skin glow. It's an excellent fat and it has lots
of fiber in it.
And Esther says
eggs have gotten a bad rap - they're actually an excellent food.
They're cost-effective,
they are a good protein source - I can even get vegetarians
to eat them. They're easy to cook, you don't have to be dexterous
in the kitchen - you put one egg in boiling water for nine to
ten minutes and it's perfectly cooked.
