Carruthers:
You cannot minimize the importance of making a good first impression
on people. And people do judge you instantly.
Mark Mazzarella:
They're very predictable conclusions that can be drawn in
terms of how close you should get to somebody, how much you
should touch them. How they're going to react in terms of whether
they believe you are trustworthy, caring, humble and capable
if you behave in certain ways.
Mark Mazzarella,
co-author of the book, Put
Your Best Food Forward says there are five magic pills to
making a good first impression.
Eye contact,
smiling, the handshake or greeting, posture and enthusiasm-
and in the studies people who show those traits are consistently
rated higher on trustworthiness, caring, humility and capability
than those who don't show those traits. And there are virtually
no negative stereotypes or associations that are made with those
traits as long as somebody doesn't go off the deep end.
And Mark says
there are three things that universally are negatives.
Anything that's
rude or bad mannered -anything that's aggressive or dominating
and bad hygiene-from body odor to dandruff on the shoulders
to crumpled clothes, unclean clothes- anything that reflects
a lack of care of personal hygiene.
