Mike
Carruthers: What people need and seldom get in the workplace is responsibility.
Dennis
W. Bakke: In effect, take the big action or make a difference
that actually affects the outcome of what we're doing. People have to be able
to make important decisions. Dennis
Bakke, author of the book, Joy
At Work says typically the top 10% of managers make all the decisions. This
is why it's so difficult to actually make a fun workplace. But what we have to
come to realize is, as leaders, that we are making it impossible for the other
90% to realize their very human nature. And that is to make decisions and hold
themselves responsible. In
his own business Dennis has turned over a lot of the decision making to people
on the front line. And interestingly… 99.9%
of the time the decision was exactly the same as it would have been if the boss
had made it, however, the difference was miraculous in terms of how people felt
about their job. And we did really come pretty close, I think to creating the
most fun workplace in human history. Because
making decisions, says Dennis, is the best part of any job and when you give people
the responsibility to make those decisions they take it very seriously. And
they really go out and find out the right answer they don't want to just depend
on themselves. We all want to have help because we know we're responsible for
the decision. The reality is if you create an environment where people hold themselves-can
hold themselves responsible that's what they do, that's part of having fun. You
