with Dan Rosen author of Just
Enough Anxiety

Carruthers: Anxiety.The word has a negative connotation - it's
something to be avoided. Dan
Rosen: And yet anxiety is not bad. Anxiety is good, it's positive
and powerful we just need the right amount of it at the right time. Dan
Rosen, author of the book Just
Enough Anxiety… Anxiety
is the energy, the life force, it's what helps us solve problems, it's what helps
us stretch into the future. So, in a competitive world, an organization without
anxiety or a life without anxiety is a life that isn't being lived. And
effective leaders understand this, says Dan. I
remember a conversation that I had with the CEO of Travelocity. Here's a billion
dollar company, Michelle Peluso is operating in twenty countries and she said
to me, " I have to make friends with anxiety and if I'm not anxious enough,
I'm not taking enough risks." And I think that's what I find, that the very
best leaders are saying when it comes to just enough anxiety. Just
as too much anxiety is bad, so is too little. I
think we move back and forth between too little anxiety (which is the face of
complacency) and too much of anxiety (which is panic in the face of fear). But
just enough anxiety is where all the energy is. It's what helps us build great
teams, it's what builds winning organizations, it helps us learn, it's our confidence.
And just enough anxiety is the positive and forceful force in our life. At
