Effective Weight Loss Strategies
Interview
with Louis J. Aronne, M.D., author of
The Skinny |
Mike Carruthers:
Did
you know that lack of sleep can make it hard to lose weight?
Louis J. Aronne,
M.D.:
It turns out that people who sleep less have an increase in
levels of a hormone called ghrelin and a reduction in another
hormone called leptin.
Dr. Louis Aronne,
author of the book The
Skinny…
And when you
take those two hormones and do that to them your body weight
goes up - you have greater appetite and no sense of fullness.
It's long been observed that shift workers have difficulty losing
weight and may in fact continue to gain weight.
Dr. Aronne has
been the director of the comprehensive weight control program
at New York Presbyterian Hospital since 1986. He says typical
high-fat junk food contributes to weight gain in ways you may
not realize.
The evidence
now is that those types of foods cause a breakdown in the weight
regulation mechanisms that would make you eat more. So the more
you eat the hungrier you get and people who've been on a diet
know just what I'm talking about.
And the whole
concept of portion size contributes to the problem of weight
gain.
Let's look at
soda - back in the fifties the average soda started out at seven
then went to twelve ounces and sixteen ounces and recently I
heard an ad for a thirty-two ounce soda. You look at the number
of calories there, it's increased astronomically.
Tomorrow, some
simple effective strategies to control weight - I'm Mike Carruthers
and that's Something You Should Know.
