Effective Weight Loss Strategies II
Interview
with Louis J. Aronne, M.D., author of
The Skinny |
Mike Carruthers:
Weight
gain is the result of overeating, so how do you eat less?
Louis J. Aronne,
M.D.:
For many people having a protein breakfast can be helpful. Having
an egg white omelet, cottage cheese, things that are protein
rather than a starch for breakfast can help to control appetite
later in the day.
Dr. Louis Aronne,
author of the book The
Skinny, says at dinner if you change the order in which
you eat your food you can also end up eating less.
We find that
starting people out with a low calorie salad then having their
vegetables, then having chicken, turkey, fish, meat and then
saving starches (the higher calorie foods) towards the end of
the meal. That cuts down on how much of that they consume and
may actually help them to have a greater sense of fullness for
a longer period of time.
When you go out
to eat it's common to have a cocktail before dinner and to have
the waiter bring you a basket of bread - it turns out both of
those things can actually make you hungrier.
So I believe
if you start with a drink, it lowers your blood sugar a little
bit; you then start eating bread that makes you lose your sense
of fullness and so you can wind up eating a lot more when you
start the meal that way. I think you're much better off if you
want to have a drink, a glass of wine - have it during the meal
don't have it at the beginning of the meal.
