Mike
Carruthers: So, you want to be successful, here's some advice…
Marcus
Buckingham : This is going to sound odd, but find out what you
don't like doing, and stop doing it. Marcus
Buckingham, author of the book, The
One Thing You Need To Know… So,
the real trick to sustain your success is to identify what things really do play
to your strengths, which don't, then cut out the ones that don't. Of
course everyone has aspects of their job that they don't like doing or they're
not good at. But
we've got to be mindful that weaknesses are not just things you're not good at
weaknesses are things that weaken you. The alarming thing is that today most Americans
don't have a few of those things in their working day they have the grand majority
of those things in their working day. If you ask Americans what percentage of
your day do you spend doing things you really like to do, only 17% of people can
say most of the day. Yet it implies that most of us are spending a disproportionate
amount of time doing things at work we don't like to do. Marcus
says cutting out the things you don't like to do is kind of a backdoor way of
finding out what your passions are. And
actually to say to somebody, "You know success comes from doing what you
love, so what do you love?" That's actually not very helpful. It's pretty
hard to pluck out of thin air, oh, what do you love, what is your passion? It's
much more practical to say to someone, "Well, what are the three or four
things you know grates on you? What do you know frustrates you?" Lets start
with those and try and cut those out because simply by cutting them out you open
yourself up to let your strengths shine forth. Tomorrow,
ways to cut out things that you don't like. I'm Mike Carruthers and that's Something
You Should Know.
