Mike
Carruthers: How much importance do you give to your sleep? Barbara
Heller: Only one third of adults say that they get at least the
recommended 8 hours of sleep per night. About 40% report that they're so sleepy
during the day that it interferes with their daily activities. Barbara
Heller, author of the book, How
To Sleep Soundly Tonight says despite what people say only very few can actually
get by with less sleep. Martha
Stewart does, she's built her empire on that amount of sleep. But there's only
about 10% of people who need less than 7 or 8 hours a night. Barbara
has a few suggestions that will improve your sleep. You
need to establish a regular curfew. You need to go to sleep the same time every
night, wake up at the same time every morning, weekends included. Taking a daily
walk, it's been shown that those people who walk six blocks at a brisk pace in
the late afternoon can cut their chances of sleep disorders by 50%. And
Barbara says if you're having trouble falling asleep try using the scent of lavender.
It's scientifically
proven to be a sedative scent. They have done studies in nursing homes and it
will help people to sleep. We can use lavender in bath products and in sleep pillows,
little sashes that you would place between your regular pillow and pillowcase.
