Mike
Carruthers:
In
the world of job-hunting if you want to be effective you have
to keep in mind why companies hire people.
David Perry:
Let's be honest, employers hire people to solve problems,
not because you're a great guy. They don't know you're a great
guy or a great gal until well after they've hired you.
David Perry,
co-author of the book, Guerrilla
Marketing For Job Hunters…
You have to understand
you don't need to impress employers with your credentials you
need to communicate with them. And that means talking about
the things that they talk about; their issues, their problems,
your solution, as you.
Too often when
we communicate with employers we don't stand out because we
use very boring language.
Well, let's take
email for example, I get two thousand emails a day and most
of them sound like this; the subject line will say, "Sales
resume attached for your review." Why would I care? It
totally lacks any sizzle and it's short on specifics. So, if
you wanted to re-write that title for an email you'd say something
like, "Mike, how many VP of sales can generate one hundred
and fifty million dollars in new revenues in three years?"
- now that gets my attention.
David has an
excellent technique for getting a hold of people who are hard
to get a hold of, and that's to call between six and eight in
the morning.
Because senior
executives are in the office between that period, I mean they
all are. And if you absolutely can't do it in the morning or
you want to get a jump on the next day then you start calling
at six o'clock at night- they're all still there. But between
nine and five there's a myriad of gatekeepers between you and
who you want
