The Importance Of Professional Relationships
Interview
with Keith Ferrazzi, author of the book, Never
Eat Alone
|
Mike Carruthers:
Successful people will tell you that no one can really achieve
success all by themselves.
Keith
Ferrazzi:
Every success I've ever had, in fact I would argue that any of
your listeners, every success they've ever had has been significantly
contributed to by other individuals.
Keith
Ferrazzi, author of the book, Never
Eat Alone says success is all about relationships, so to
develop those relationships…
You're
number one objective when meeting somebody is to think about
how to make them successful. If you really do show up in your
relationships and in life that way there's a lot of good that
will come back to you through those relationships but more importantly
you'll just have a lot more joy in your life.
Networking
is another word for this but Keith believes many people don't
really understand networking.
There
are friends of mine that consistently call me and say, "
Keith, I'm now unemployed, I've got to start networking."
And my immediate comment was no loser you need to start job
hunting. Networking is what your sorry butt should have been
doing for the last five years so you could pick up the phone
and call twelve great friends and have three job offers within
a couple of weeks.
So, how
do you start developing those networking relationships?
Well
you start where I think you would find personal joy. You love
dinner parties then let's have a very simple casual dinner party
of four folks. But stretch a little, invite one person you've
wanted to get to know a little bit better but you haven't. And
yes, some day down the line you can assume… It's sort of like
the great karma of relationships; you can assume that they'll
be there for you as you've been there for them.
