April 20, 2005:
How To Enjoy Getting Old
Interview with David Niven PhD,author of the book, The 100 Simple Secrets Of The Best Half Of Life

Mike Carruthers:
It's no fun getting old. That's the assumption many people make, but apparently it's not necessarily true.

David Niven PhD:
There's absolutely no reason to think that you're going to get less happy as you age. What we find is that folks can be as happy, in fact even more happy.

David Niven, author of the book, The 100 Simple Secrets Of The Best Half Of Life

One of the things that changes for the better for an awful lot of folks is that responsibilities tend to shift and in many cases responsibilities tend to fade away over time. Which has the effect of giving people tremendous freedom. For many people this is the first time that that's ever happened to them in their lives and it can be an incredibly liberating experience.

And something else very important to staying happy as we age…

An awfully large part of this is simply having a direction, having something you want to do. One of the things that research clearly shows is retiring by itself for example doesn't make us happier. Just having a whole big chunk of time on our hands by itself actually isn't a positive it's something of a negative it can overwhelm an awful lot of people. But having some time on our hands and a direction, something to do with that time is about the best experience anyone is going to have.

Tomorrow some specific suggestions on how to stay happy as you get older. I'm Mike Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
