Mike Carruthers:
Not only can you be happy in the second half of life, you can
be happier than you were in the first half.
David
Niven PhD:
It's absolutely clear from the research that as long as you're
pursuing something that matters to you, you can be happy no matter
what your age is.
David
Niven, author of the book, The
100 Simple Secrets Of The Best Half Of Life says it's clear
that it's the lack of interest in life and goals that contributes
to the misery of getting older.
When
you stop pursuing what matters to you nothing of the freedoms
of aging, nothing of that, has any value to you because there's
nothing that you're seeking.
Concerns
about poor health can interfere with the enjoyment of getting
older but David has some advice.
And this
seems silly and superficial but it's actually quite important.
Find a doctor that you personally like, that you personally
trust, because if we don't personally like them we're more likely
to disregard their advice.
And David
says people who are happy in the second half of life tend to
understand one important thing.
Aging
by itself is not the situation. What's happening to you is the
phase of life is changing and the responsibilities on your life
are changing and those things are either going to be handled
well or handled poorly. But there's absolutely no reason to
dread aging by itself as a factor in enjoying your life.
