Improve Your Car's Fuel Efficiency
Interview
with Norman Berke Research Associate, STP www.stp.com |
Mike Carruthers:
Never has gasoline been so expensive, so what can you do to
improve the miles per gallon your car gets?
Norman
Berke:
Driving habits, if you're a person with a heavy foot and does
a lot of hard acceleration and drives at 75 and 80 mph on the
highway you're not going to get the same kind of fuel economy
as someone who accelerates gently and stays in the 55 range.
Norman
Berke, Research Associate for STP Research and Development says
tire pressure can also really impact your fuel economy.
There
have been some studies done that show you can lose 1-2% fuel
economy for every pound of pressure you're under inflated. If
you're down a few pounds, yeah that starts to add up.
Make
sure you're not carrying any excess weight in the car and think
about aerodynamics outside the car.
So, having
things like roof racks or bike racks those are fine as long
as you're using them. But to drive around with them empty you're
wasting gas because basically you're interfering with that aerodynamic
efficiency of the car.
And what
about the windows, up or down?
Windows
down has a pretty significant impact on fuel efficiency. There's
a pretty good argument that says you're better off having the
windows up and the air conditioning running to stay cool, that
you're car will be more efficient than driving with the windows
down.
