What Influences Sleep Quality
Interview
with Rubin R. Naiman, PhD, author of
Healing Night
|
Mike
Carruthers:
You've
heard it before- we as a nation are not getting enough sleep and
the results of that may be more serious than just being tired.
Rubin R. Naiman:
There's mounting data that sleep loss is associated with
increases in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression.
Dr. Reuben R.
Naiman, author of the book, Healing
Night, says take obesity for example…
If you think
about the commonality between being sleepy and being hungry
they're both associated with low energy states. And there are
a number of chemicals called neuropeptides that communicate
to the brain and the body that we're sleepy and hungry and some
of them are the exact same chemicals. We have data now that
shows some people; when they become sleepy, confuse it with
being hungry.
Our exposure
to light may also be messing up our sleep.
Over-exposure
in my opinion to light at night, another factor that damages
our sleep, interestingly, is we're under-exposed to light during
the day. Most of us spend the vast majority of our days indoors
and we need light during the day. It increases serotonin, it
does lots of good things to our biology and psychology-and we
need darkness at night.
And the temperature
of the room also impacts your sleep.
Generally the
recommendation is to keep the bedroom about 68 degrees. In order
to fall asleep and to move more deeply into sleep the brain
and the body need to cool down.
