Mike
Carruthers: Are you finding that high food prices are forcing
you to make sacrifices? Jaci
Rae: If you want to lower the price of your meals, it doesn't mean
that you have to change the way you eat so much as you have to change the way
you shop. Jaci
Rae, author of the book 5
Meals for $5, says the first rule of grocery shopping is never go to the store
hungry. Next… Call
up your stores; find out when their sales are. Ask when meat is on sale and then
double that with your coupon. Find out when your store has your double, triple
coupon days if they have them - some do, some don't. Jaci
says a lot of people believe that coupons really don't work in the long run. Nope
- they really do work and that is the mistake a lot of people make. Put it this
way - one day I took my fiancé out and I said, "I bet you that we
can feed both of us for under $5, with a bunch of coupons. There's sales at Savemart
right now - let's go in." And we walked out of there with a meal that fed
both of us (plus some) and change left over from that $5. Always
take a list with you when you go grocery shopping and if you buy something that's
not right… You
know, if you get it back home and there's moldy strawberries at the bottom, you
can take back produce - don't take it back right away because then you're wasting
gas. But call up the store and tell them. Ask to speak to the manager of that
department. I've never had a store not tell me, "When you come back in seek
me out and I'll give you free ones or I'll give you a refund if you bring your
receipt." You can link to Jaci's
