May
1, 2007:
Is Your Career Too Important?
Interview
with Tom Stern, author of CEO
Dad
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Many
men and women get very focused on their career.
Tom Stern:
And there's nothing wrong with having a great career
but you have to decide why you want to have that career and how
you're serving yourself, your family, your society - those are
the important things that I think determine the value and quality
of your life.
Tom Stern, author
of the book
CEO Dad - How to Avoid Getting Fired by Your Family was
a very successful driven executive until one day…
My family suffered
a home invasion, we had robbers that came into the home and
they had followed my wife because she had a diamond ring, a
diamond ring that I had given her because being the guy that
I was I wasn't going to spend more time with her so I bought
her something. And it came back to bite me this diamond ring
because these guys spotted it and they followed her home, and
I was at home and unfortunately in my case the epiphany came
only when life literally put a gun to my head.
That experience
caused Tom to completely re-prioritize his life and just so
you know, Tom's book is actually a humor book. In fact it's
based on his syndicated comic strip CEO Dad.
Who is kind of
an exaggerated version of me stuck in time. CEO Dad loves his
family - the irony is that his family would be everything that
he wants it to be if he weren't in it. And that's the predicament
- you become the source of the very problem you wish you could
fix.
Tomorrow, Tom's
advice on finding that important balance in life - I'm Mike
Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
