Is Your Career Too Important? II
Interview
with Tom Stern, author of CEO
Dad

Mike
Carruthers:
Is
your career more important than the more important things in life?
And how do you know where that work/life balance line is?
Tom Stern:
If what you're doing is truly designed to provide for
your family, provide a service and express your talents in the
workplace - that's a good thing. Where it crosses the line is
when it's obsessive, when you stop caring about people, you stop
listening.
Tom Stern, author
of the book CEO
Dad - How to Avoid Getting Fired by Your Family …
The best way
to know if you've crossed the line is look at those people around
you. Are people unhappy around you? Are you dismissing their
unhappiness? Or are you inquiring about it? The truth is you
have to be honest with yourself in the moment by yourself and
deal with the issues. And the issues are: are your kids feeling
neglected, is your wife feeling left out, or bulldozed, are
you really thinking of others, or are you constantly involved
in your own self-aggrandizement?
Tom was admittedly
one of those selfish, self-absorbed businessmen until his family
members were victimized by a terrible crime - and it caused
him to rethink his entire life.
If you're really
honest with yourself, most people can recognize when they're
being selfish. You know it's a murky area but there's a bright
flashlight that shines through it like a piercing laser and
that is self-awareness, directness, and honesty with yourself.
