How To Stop Worrying
Interview
with Dr. Susan Jeffers author of Embracing
Uncertainty
Mike
Carruthers:
Bad things happen. They happen to all of us and when they do,
we have a choice.
Dr.
Susan Jeffers:
We could choose to be the victim, "Poor me. Why did
this happen?" or we could choose to say, "OK. This
did happen and now I'm going to create something wonderful out
of it. I don't know how at this moment in time, but I'm going
to look for it and I'm going to find it."
Dr. Susan
Jeffers author of the book Embracing
Uncertainty says there are plenty of examples of people
who have suffered great tragedies and found something positive.
I look
at Mark Klaas whose daughter was murdered in Petaluma, California
and he made something wonderful. I think of Christopher Reeve
who made something wonderful out of his accident. If you look
at the worse that can happen in life and you say, "Hey,
if they can make something wonderful, I can make something wonderful."
Susan believes
that with the right tools, all of us can handle whatever the
world throws at us.
I know
what helps me all the time is a simple affirmation, "Whatever
happens, I'll handle it. Whatever happens, I'll handle it."
I have it on my desk, on my bookcase, every place. So that when
the what ifs come into my head, "What if this happens?"
I'll handle it. "What if that happens?" I'll handle
it, and it's like the weaker part being talked to by the stronger
part. And it's so powerful.
