Mike Carruthers:
Ever been tempted to use an email to address or respond to
a difficult situation with someone because well, it avoids that
confrontation. Well, think about this…
Brian Fugere:
Email is exactly the wrong medium to have any sort of difficult
conversation. Invariably on email it escalates before it gets
easier.
Brian Fugere, co-author of the book, Why
Business People Speak Like Idiots…
There's some famous studies done by the name
of Marabian, back in the 70tys it shows in communication, 7%
of what is actually communicated is the content the actual content
of what is said. 93% is communicated via tonality, body language
and everything other than content. And yet when we work on email
we're able to convey the 7% very well but not the 93%. People
are genetically coded to get their meaning from tone and from
body language and from other cues and we kind of have forgotten
that.
And of course we all know that because everyone
has either sent or received an email that was taken the wrong
way. So Brian's advice…
Get off email and pick up the damn phone
and have a conversation. People have forgotten the quaint art
of the conversation and the fact that talking live one on one
is a way to get a lot more done convey a lot more meaning, build
relationships. It has gotten, it's gotten almost ludicrous.
