Squeezing Every Mile Out Of A Gallon Of Gasoline
Interview
with Jack Gillis, author of
The Car Book
|
Mike
Carruthers:
More
than ever before we need to squeeze every mile out of every gallon
of gasoline and the first thing to realize is that gas is gas.
Jack Gillis:
And no matter what the advertisements say, any of the
gasolines will be perfectly acceptable whatever the brand is,
so it does pay to shop around for price.
Jack Gillis,
Director of Public Affairs for the Consumer Federation of America
and author of The
Car Book…
By being sensitive
to five, six, and seven cent differences can knock 2 or 3% off
of your annual fuel cost.
Unless your car's
manual specifically requires premium gasoline, Jack says always
use regular or you're just wasting money.
Some other things
you can do, keep your tires pumped up. We estimate that a quarter
of the vehicles on the road today have under-inflated tires
and that knocks about 3% off of your fuel efficiency. Another
thing is to check your air filter- a dirty air filter will knock
about 10% off of your fuel economy.
And how you drive
can make a big difference in how much you spend on gasoline.
The smoother
you accelerate and decelerate, the better your mileage. If you're
one of these folks that drives erratically, a smooth foot can
save you about 33% in terms of fuel efficiency on the highway
and about 5% around town.
Tomorrow, more
ways to improve your miles per gallon- I'm Mike Carruthers and
that's Something You Should Know.
