Carruthers:
Why is it that microwaves will go through a glass bowl and
cook food inside the microwave, but the microwaves don't go through
the glass door and cook you?
Robert L. Wolke:
Because the glass is backed up by a perforated metal plate
with little holes in it.
Richard Wolke, author of the book, What
Einstein Told His Cook.
The wavelength of the microwaves is about four inches long
and these holes are only about half an inch so the microwaves
simply can't fit through those holes, so it's perfectly safe.
How do you get the most juice out of a lemon or lime?
Some people will say if you can hand-squeeze a lemon, you should
first roll it firmly on the countertop beneath the palm of your
hand. Other people say heat it up, put it in the microwave for
about 30 seconds, and the juice will flow easier. Well, I got
myself a whole bunch of lemons and I found out that rolling them
on the tabletop does nothing to increase the amount of juice you
get when squeezing it with your hand. Also, microwaving it did
nothing, but if you roll it first real hard and then microwave
it, it practically gushes juice.
If you ever need to defrost food quickly Richard says remember
that metal is a great conductor of heat, and frying pans are made
out of metal.
Just take a heavy, metal frying pan, stainless or aluminum,
and put your frozen food on it. You'll be amazed at how fast your
frozen foods will defrost.
