May
25, 2005:
Is It Ever Okay To Cheat?
Interview
with Jon M. Huntsman, author of
Winners
Never Cheat |
Mike Carruthers:
Cheating. We know it's wrong yet it seems somehow more acceptable
today. Cheaters can often rationalize that it's okay for them
to cheat in this situation. However…
Jon
Huntsman:
Everybody knows in their own heart of hearts, and often times
people close to you also know if you're a straight shooter or
if you are not.
Jon Huntsman,
author of the book,
Winners Never Cheat…
We have
to separate making an honest mistake from intentionally trying
to hurt somebody or cheat somebody. In the long run they always
win out. And nice guys do finish first.
Jon is
a self made billionaire, philanthropist and father of nine.
One of his sons is the governor of Utah. Jon says when you cheat…
You've
always got to be looking over your shoulder; you've always got
to be wondering who knows that I did this. You're a little bit
on the run all the time when your word isn't your bond or when
you've cheated somebody. You know, I tell the story in the book
about when I'm a young boy and I reach in and try to take an
ice cream sandwich out of a … they've just been invented in
those days…and the lady in the store asks me if I was going
to pay for it and I didn't think that she had seen me take it.
I took it back sheepishly and she never said another thing.
But I thought about it every day of my life. It wouldn't have
been worth it because she would have known and I would have
known all through her life that I stole that. And that's how
it is when we do things that we shouldn't be doing; our conscience
never leaves us alone.
