Male/Female Communication
Interview
with Connie Glaser, author of
Gender Talk Works
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Whether
you're male or female, it's interesting to note how the other
gender is so very different when it comes to verbal communication.
Connie Glaser:
The biggest complaint that women have as far as their
communication with men is that they don't listen well - and that
they don't take women seriously.
Connie Glaser,
author of the book Gender
Talk Works…
On the flip side
men feel that women are too emotional and they take too long
to get to the point.
When we understand
how and why the other gender speaks, we can improve our communication.
A lot of times
women speak simply for the report. So consequently she uses
language to develop connection. Men on the other hand typically
use language or conversation to convey information - and also
to convey status. So whoever has the most recent golf scores,
that person is the winner in the conversation - who has the
most information.
In the workplace,
Connie says, men and women bring different but complimentary
communication styles to the table.
Women happen
to be great at building consensus, engaging people, bringing
people in. Ok, now that's good. On the other hand, sometimes
decisions need to be made very quickly. You need to have a person
at the top who can make a decision without input of others and
men tend to be better at that.
Tomorrow some
interesting things women say that hurt them in the workplace
- I'm Mike Carruthers and that's Something You Should Know.
