How To Get A Promotion At Work
Interview
with Donald Asher, author of
Who Gets Promoted
|
Mike
Carruthers:
There's
no guarantee you'll get promoted at work, but you can do a lot
to improve your chances. And step one is to let your boss know
you want a promotion.
Donald Asher:
If your boss doesn't know you want a promotion, she's
not going to promote you. You have to let this be known and you
also have to get their advice: "What do I need to do to get
promoted out of this position?"
Donald Asher,
author of the book Who
Gets Promoted Who Doesn't and Why?…
The advice that
you get sometimes is: "You can't get promoted out of this
position" - so you're going to have to go somewhere else.
The other advice you will get is; "You need to do this,
you need to do that" - and that's the advice that you need
in order to achieve the goal.
And of course
if they give you advice on what it takes to get promoted, you
have to follow it.
I'm thinking
of a particular case - this young engineer asked a senior guy
on the team, "What do I need to do to get promoted?"
And the guy said, "You have to go to an assignment in one
of our factories." The kid doesn't want to go, the factory's
in Indiana, by refusing to move there he killed his career right
there. He will never get promoted inside that company because
he asked; "What do I need to do?" ; they told him,
he refused to do it - game over.
And Donald says
you also need to be sure you can get promoted to where you want
from where you are.
The classic example
is inside a store, certain jobs lead to assistant manager and
certain jobs don't go anywhere. And if you're a cashier that
goes only to head cashier, you will never become the assistant
manager. But if you're a stocker, (if you're somebody who puts
boxes on shelves), that leads to assistant manager, leads to
manager, leads to regional responsibilities. You can't break
the rules on career paths.
