Carruthers:
As
parents we have experiences that we don't often give a lot of
thought to, but can be very significant to our children - like
going to the doctor, which can be very scary.
Dr. Jenn Berman:
Some of the things you can do, depending upon their
age, is you can bring a transitional object to the doctor - like
a blanket or a doll. You can have the doctor examine the doll
first so that they can show your child what she's going to do
- because knowing before it happens can lower the anxiety rate.
Psychologist

A to Z Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids…
And set up a
pattern that you can continue - after we go to the doctor we
go out for some lemonade together and that becomes something
your child looks forward to and it lowers their anxiety about
the doctor visit.
Teaching kids
about money is important because kids will teach themselves
based on what they see.
Simple things
like when you go to the ATM and take out money and your child
sees you, it's a good idea to explain, "Mommy and Daddy
earned this money and we have a certain amount in the bank."
Because otherwise young children think, "Oh, it's a machine
that gives money, anytime we want money we can have money."
Children today
are so over-scheduled and don't have a lot of down time.
If kids don't
have down time they don't tend to become creative, they don't
tend to get to know themselves and we want kids who can spend
time alone. Because those are kids who are less likely to pick
unhealthy partners when they're older, or stick around in unhealthy
relationships, because there's a sense of: "I'm fine on
my own."
