Mike Carruthers:
In some ways how parents parent is different than in previous
generations.
Susan
Stone Belton:
I think parents today are focusing on things that aren't really
important so we're focused on grades, we're focused on being
the best on the team.
Educator,
Susan Stone Belton who's forthcoming DVD is called Burn Your
Kids Report Card And Still Raise A Successful Adult…
Instead
we should be focused on, is my child honest, is my child kind,
is my child thoughtful, things that go into making somebody
a successful adult.
It's
not that Susan believes grades don't have a place, but…
Instead
of saying to your child you must earn straight "A's",
I think we should be saying to our kids you must try your best.
For some kids maybe getting a "C" or a "D"
in math class really is the best they can do. But we can't force
children to earn good grades, we just can't.
Susan
believes that when it comes to the important things, if you
let them, children will make the right choice.
That
doesn't mean we don't reprimand them when needed. It doesn't
mean we don't expect good behavior from them but, I also believe
that if you do that in a respectful caring way... I think a
lot of parents treat their children ways that they wouldn't
necessarily treat anybody else, and I think that that is wrong.
