The Unspoken Rules Of Getting Ahead
Interview
with Richard Templar, author of
The
Rules Of Work
|
Mike Carruthers:
To get ahead in your career you have to know the rules.
Richard
Templar:
Number one rule is you must be very, very good at your job and
you must never let anybody see how hard you have to work to
be that good at your job.
Richard
Templar, author of the book, The
Rules Of Work says beyond that there are some other very
important yet seemingly subtle rules of work.
Most
people think that if they're very, very efficient they will
get on and be promoted and this isn't necessarily true. You
have to be very effective rather than efficient. So, if I'm
very good at my job and I'm very efficient and I'm processing
widgets and I process forty widgets a day and I suddenly realize
that I can maybe process forty-five widgets a day I might be
looking for a promotion and you're never going to get on then.
But if I can work out a way where everybody can process forty-five
widgets then I'm the next general manager.
If you
want to be the next general manager or whatever job you want
next…
Look
at whoever does the job now, how do they dress, what style of
manager are they? And start to adopt some of those mannerisms
and then you become that person.
Richard
says the more you act like a manger the more likely you are
to become part of the management team. For example…
Staff
always talks about them; they have imposed this rule on us.
Whereas if you talk about we you become separate from the staff,
if you're separate from the staff, well you must be the manager.
