Carruthers:
It's a safe bet that most of us would like to live a long and
independent life.
David A. Lipschitz, M.D., PhD:
In order to achieve that, we have to have two important things.
The first is our health, but just as critical is to be happy.
Dr. David Lipschitz, Professor
of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas and author of the
book Breaking The Rules Of Aging.
And there are
three important elements of good health: eat right, but don't
diet; exercise, and the more the better; and the third is to
be an educated consumer of health care. Don't believe everything
your doctor tells you.
And when it comes
to happiness, it's critical to have love in your life.
Actually, the
number one predictor of longevity in men is being married. Married
men live 10 years longer than single men; and if you're not
married, then love of family, love of community - not being
isolated.
Having faith
and being creative and involved in the community are also important
elements. And back to exercise, Dr. Lipschitz says just walking
around the block is not enough.
There are two
forms of exercise that are critically important--aerobic, walk,
workout, get your heart rate up; but resistance training - exercising
with weights - builds muscle, builds bone, improves gait and
balance, and reduces falls in late life as well. And guess what?
More individuals die of falls and fractures than of breast,
colon and prostate cancer combined.
