Mike
Carruthers: Human nature can sometimes lead us astray. According
to a recent study, one out of four people who think they might have cancer delay
going to the doctor... Dr.
Solomon Hamburg: From any time between two and six months, despite
the fact that they had signs and symptoms that were concerning them of the possibility
of cancer. Dr.
Solomon Hamburg, President of the Tower Cancer Research Foundation, says the overwhelming
reason people delay going to the doctor is fear. This
goes across all socioeconomic groups and all age groups. There's a great fear
about the "c" word. And once they went in to see the doctor, the survey
actually looked at what the feelings were about the level of care and people were
very satisfied with the medical care they received. Although
it's understandable why people might be afraid to hear they have cancer, delay
can only make it worse. And
that's so important because we know that early diagnosis in many types of cancer
can be curative. Dr.
Hamburg says cancer treatments are improving all the time. And his message to
anyone who thinks they might have cancer is that… Cancer
is a potentially a successfully-treated disease on which early diagnosis can have
a great impact, particularly when they're scared about cancer. You
