Every manager needs to know what makes a loyal employee, and
it's not money.

Durkin:
The number one thing that people want is they want to feel
like they are in on things. I mean clearly understanding what
the future of this organization is, what the goals, objectives
are, and how the company plans on reaching those goals and objectives.
Diane
Durkin, author of the book, The
Loyalty Advantage says employers need to know this and other
ways to keep employees loyal and happy because there won't be
enough employees to go around.
By the
year 2010 there's going to be 10 million more jobs than people
to fill those jobs. And by 2031 the gap goes to 35 million.
I mean that's huge, so companies need to take this very seriously
now and keep the people that they have. Because what's happening
is every time somebody walks out that door there's knowledge,
there's expertise that walks out with them. And that knowledge
and expertise you can't easily replace.
And employers
also need to cope with a new attitude towards work.
Like
the Baby Boomers, I often say they live to work versus the X-generation
who work to live. And they're going to work very hard but they're
going to enjoy their families and they're not going to put in
the 60-hour work week that you have found in the past.
