Mike
Carruthers: At least one out of five families has a child who
is ill mentally or physically or has some special need that makes life very difficult
for the siblings of that child. Christine
Frisbee: One of the children who wrote a story in the book, her
name is Mallory, was telling a group of people how her brother, who's autistic,
was acting up in the bus and all of the kids on the bus were making fun of him
and she was so angry and furious and she could say nothing. Christine
Frisbee, author of the book Day
by Day, says it is remarkable how the siblings of these children with challenges
look back on their childhood once they mature. Most
of them look back at their childhood as a somewhat difficult time but also as
time that they would never change. They look at it as a time where they had to
learn things that their friends didn't' have to learn and it actually made them
stronger, wiser, and more focused in life. Christine,
who herself lost a child to leukemia says the rest of us can help make life easier
for these families. One
of the best things that they can do is to be sensitive and compassionate towards
families who do have a sick child. Educate their children not to make fun of other
children, don't shy away from us, don't be afraid to say hello, don't be afraid
to ask how we are or how our child is or how the siblings are. If you make
it easier for us, we will be fine. At
