Mike
Carruthers:
To succeed in any field you have to have talent. But talent by
itself is not enough.
John Maxwell:
If you think about it for a moment, how many times do we know
people who are highly talented and yet they're not reaching
their potential at all? And we kind of shake our heads and say,
"Why don't they do better with all the gifts and talents
they have?"
John Maxwell,
author of the book "Talent
is Never Enough," believes you must combine your talent
with other characteristics in order to be successful. And one
of those characteristics is belief.
You see our belief
determines our behavior. It's impossible, Mike, for you and
me to behave in a way that we don't believe. And if I have the
right kind of belief, it lifts my talent.
And perseverance
is also necessary.
Judy Holiday
said one time, "Dreams become reality when we keep our
commitment to them." I love that expression. Many people
never compound their success because they don't understand the
value of day in and day out persevering.
And focus is
another important ingredient that will propel your talent.
Hank Aaron one
time said, "Focus separates the superstar from the average
ball player." When he was asked to explain that, basically
what Hank Aaron said was that the superstar concentrates just
a little longer. And I think it's in that phrase: "concentrates
just a little longer" that really is key to focusing in
on what our talent is and what we should be doing. So many people
stay with it but they don't stay with it long enough.
