Couples& Chemistry II
Interview
with Mira Kirshenbaum, author of Is
He Mr Right?
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Recent
research shows that chemistry between two people is the most
important element of a happy long-term relationship and there
are five dimensions of chemistry that all have to be working.
Mira Kirshenbaum:
They don't have to be great, it's just pass or fail -
just pretty good. Then you have a solid predictor of a happy
future together.
Mira Kirshenbaum,
author of the book, Is
He Mr. Right? conducted the research and explains the five
dimensions of chemistry.
The first dimension
is this funny mixture of being totally at ease with someone
and at the same time feeling really connected to them - it just
feels right to be together. The second dimension is the ability
to have fun together. Fun it turns out is the glue of intimacy.
You do need to sense that being together can be fun.
The third dimension
of chemistry is feeling safe with the other person.
You feel you
won't be betrayed and seriously disappointed, you feel the other
person will be there when you need them. The fourth dimension
of chemistry is physical chemistry it's what everyone thinks
chemistry is. And the fifth and final dimension of chemistry
is mutual respect. You cannot say a relationship feels good
if you don't feel the other person is terrific. And you don't
feel the other thinks that you're terrific - not as you might
be someday in the future but as you are right now.
