Mike Carruthers:
The ability
to get along with others. It's a skill that's more important
than you might think.
John
Maxwell:
Because
what is it? 7 out of 10 people get fired from their jobs not
because they lack skills but because they can't get along with
people.
John
Maxwell, author of the book, 25
Ways To Win With People, says an important way to win with
people is to let them know you need them.
And a
classic example of that is asking for directions. A Stranger
can ask a stranger for directions and that stranger will stop
everything that he or she is doing. Why? Because there is something
very ego fulfilling in knowing something that the person asking
the question doesn't know. And what I have found is that in
relationships as far as connecting with people; if you ask questions,
ask people to help you and tell them that you need them, that
really draws people to you.
And John
says another powerful way to connect with people is what he
calls, the 30-second rule.
The 30-second
rule, Mike, basically says that in the first 30 seconds say
something affirming to an individual. It might be a situation
where I come up and see you and I'm assuming that we've had
a relationship and I would look at you and I would say, "Mike
one of the things I greatly appreciate about you is your sincerity
and that you just constantly are wanting to do the right thing.
And that's something I really value in myself and I value that
in you." And it is amazing what happens as far as them
connecting with you and relating to you.
