Why Asking For Help Is So Hard
Interview with M. Nora Klaver, author of Mayday!

Mike Carruthers:
Are you good about asking for help when you need it? Most of us aren't - why?

M. Nora Klaver:
People are really afraid of looking weak, or incompetent or incapable or not on top of things. Men and women both struggle with that.

Nora Klaver, author of the book Mayday! Asking for Help in Times of Need, says even when we're struggling with something and people say, "Can I give you a hand with that?" We usually say, "No, that's ok, I've got it." But asking for help can make your life better.

Nowadays people are stretched too thin. We're asked to do an awful lot, especially in work environments. We don't have the support that we'd like to have regularly. And our lives get tougher and tougher. And asking for help is one way to achieve that life balance that we're always in search of.

And asking for help has other benefits too.

It helps the other person feel great about themselves. We always like to contribute. It also clarifies relationships, you figure out pretty quickly whom you can count on and whom you can't. And it also creates new relationships. Asking for help from a stranger can lead you to a friendship.

And asking for help allows you to discover new ways of doing things.

Because the person you asked for help from may have a better idea. And being open to that is a wonderful thing. It just means you might get your problem solved just that much faster.
