How To React When You Get Upset
Interview
with Harriet Lerner author of The
Dance Of Fear
|
Mike Carruthers:
When it comes to dealing with the problems of life, here's
some of the best advise you'll ever get.
Harriet
Lerner:
I teach people to strike when the iron is cold because
if you speak or if you make an important decision in the heat
of anxiety it may be the wrong decision.
Dr. Harriet
Lerner, author of the book, The
Dance Of Fear…
You sometimes
can tell in your body whether you're just in an anxious, reactive,
judgmental place- your brain is ruminating and you feel that
you have to send this angry email to your sister right now because
you've been up since three in the morning thinking about how
she's cheated you out of Dad's money. That is the time not to
act, the time is when you've been able to calm yourself down
enough to know that you're acting out of your best self.
It's
just the way we're wired says Harriet, when problems present
themselves human beings feel anxiety and…
Anxiety
takes away our compassion and our creativity. So, courage requires
us to calm down so that we can be able to think rather than
anxiously react.
Tomorrow,
the emotion no one ever talks about. I'm Mike Carruthers and
that's Something You Should Know.
