How To Take Control Of Your Career
Interview
with S. Gary Snodgrass, author of Stepping
Up
|
Mike
Carruthers:
If you're not happy with the state of your career, you can do
something about it and it's simply this…
S. Gary Snodgrass:
Take control of your career - if you don't, chances are no one
else will. So your career is your creation.
S. Gary Snodgrass,
author of the book Stepping
Up…
And then do the
following three things: look at yourself - your interests, values,
skills, aspiration; look around - what are the trends, who are
the pathways, who's having more success than you? ; and then
finally, look ahead - what are the goals, what are the support
systems you're going to need to achieve your objectives?
If you're not
really sure which direction your career should go…
Have a no-holds
barred discussion with yourself. What do you like to do and
why? Who do you like to be around and why? What gives you the
most fulfillment, joy and satisfaction and why? That's going
to give you some clues as to the kind of work you enjoy. For
example: do you enjoy working with ideas and concepts or do
you enjoy working with people?
If you like the
career track you're on, there is a surefire way to turbocharge
your success.
It's this: excelling
in your current job by delivering more than is expected, by
being a team player, by putting the interest of the company
first and by continuing to grow, develop and realize that lifelong
learning never stops for successful people.
