The Magic Ingredient In Public Speaking
Interview
with Robert Jolles, author of Mental
Agility
|
Mike
Carruthers:
How
often have you heard someone speak or give a seminar and left
saying to yourself…
Robert Jolles:
"I didn't really enjoy that presentation, I got
very little out of it."
Robert Jolles,
a professional speaker and author of the book Mental
Agility The Path To Persuasion says the magic of a good
presentation is getting the audience involved - not trying to
cram as much information in as possible. So, when Robert speaks…
If it's an hour,
I'll knock a half hour of material off immediately. We frequently
belch out material but once again we have an audience leaving
that will not act or implement anything that they just learned.
And if they don't act on it and they don't implement on it those
funny stories and all that information you dumped on them, which
they enjoyed for that hour, will fade very quickly.
So, Robert's
advice is to rethink the whole process of speaking.
And so what I
say to myself is: instead of teaching you three different processes
in an hour - I'm going to teach you one, really good. And I'm
going to follow the theory that says: what you hear you'll forget,
what you see you'll remember and what you do you'll learn. So,
in my hour I'm going to pick a small piece of the pie. I'm going
to teach it really well with questions - I'm going to get you
involved in this experience- I'm going to put you in a case
study and when you walk out of here your feeling will be that's
the greatest presentation I ever was a part of and I'm able
to implement things that this guy just said. That's a home run.
