Coping With Tragedy
Interview
with Judy Collins, author of The
Seven T's
|
Mike
Carruthers:
You know Judy Collins best for her music but she's also dealt
with grief and tragedy. Her son Clark committed suicide in 1992.
Judy Collins:
Well it's shock and it's a question of "How can I go on?"
Those are probably the two things that are most universal.
Judy Collins
has a new book on the subjects tragedy, grief, and hope called
The
Seven T's. She says her experience has made her a different
person.
Well I think
I'm much more alive and I'm much more in touch with what's meaningful
in my life. I think in experiencing all these things, you find
out the truth about what all the great religions are always
telling us. They're saying when you really live through these
things the deep losses will teach you a great deal about how
to be happy.
In addition to
her own tragedy, Judy spoke with hundreds of people who have
suffered similar profound loss. And her message is really one
of hope for people going through the pain of grief.
There is joy,
and laughter will come again and the ability to smile, to work.
I would suggest that if you don't have an animal you get one;
that if you don't have a journal that you start one; and that
you begin to reach out to people you can trust.
Judy says everyone
handles grief in their own way.
I say about grief
that it can take weeks, it can take months - but don't let it
take years.
